Belhaven Lobster have been fishing in the North Sea waters surrounding Dunbar for over 30 years. The family run business was founded by Eddie McFarlane and now alongside son, Lawrie. Based at the Fisherman’s Stores at Victoria Harbour in Dunbar, Belhaven Lobster specialise in sustainably caught lobster as well as brown crab, velvet crab, sea urchins and whelks.
Belhaven Lobster’s vessel, Tangaroa, can often be seen from Belhaven Bay. The vessel is named after the Maori god of the sea and uses ‘parlour creels’ to fish the rocky sea floor up to six miles off the coast of Dunbar. The use of parlour creels is a highly sustainable method. Belhaven Lobster also follow government legislation that outlines minimum landing sizes, meaning that everything that is undersized is returned unharmed to the sea.
Belhaven Lobster also have an innovative chilled sea water storage tank at the harbour. The storage tank keeps the lobster at an optimal temperature and has a constant uninterrupted supply of oxygenated water which allows the produce to be stored and kept as fresh as it was when it left the sea.
This technology means they can keep a stock of lobsters which can be delivered to customers at a time that is suitable to them- for this reason, Belhaven are an ideal choice for catering companies and restaurants.
